Having come to Australia after hearing about the gold rushes, John Alston Wallace used the proceeds from a gold find to open a store and start a chain of Star Hotels. At that time, the settlement previously known as Barkly, was renamed Rutherglen. The popular story has it that Wallace earned the right to name the town after his hometown in Scotland by “shouting” the bar at his Star Hotel in the main street.
A spirited, generous and enthusiastic entrepreneur and politician known for his madcap stunts, Mr Wallace backed small mining concerns and water conservation, formed the Chiltern Valley Gold Mines Co. and invested heavily in local companies. He was so influential, banquets were held in his honour, celebrating the employment of hundreds of miners in the region.
